I'm trying to find practical info on EtherCAT, and so far have
come up pretty much empty-handed. I've tons of documents full
of glossy, useless marketing happy-talk, and I've found plenty
of excruciatingly detailed examples of fine German specsmanship.

But, I haven't been able to answers to real engineering
questions like how Ethernet over EtherCAT (EoE) and File over
EtherCAT (FoE) are supported:

  * If I want to support EoE, is a dedicated sync manager(s)
required? If so, how many sync managers and how much buffer
    RAM is used?

  * If I want to support FoE, is a dedicated sync manager
required? If so, how much buffer RAM is used?

Where does one find answers to questions like those?
