I'm not sure whether they address the issue you've encountered here
(especially as I don't use EoE myself), but there are several patches to EoE
and mailbox handling in general in the default branch and in the unofficial
patchset
(https://sourceforge.net/u/uecasm/etherlab-patches/ci/default/tree/#readme).
Perhaps one or more of these will help you?
