Is this etherlab or ethercat that you are trying to install? Most probably 
etherlab, because ethercat uses kbuild to install, which would copy the 
modules into the modules directory correctly.

etherlab does not install into standard modules, but rather to 
/opt/etherlab/modules
Starting etherlab using
# /etc/init.d/etherlab start
loads them correctly, though, so you do not need to worry about the directory 
yourself.
